Ford has made quite a few variations of the F-150 vehicle. For example, the F-150 began in 1975 as part of a long-running series that flourishes to this day. Whatever type of F-150 you are looking for, you probably want to ask yourself, “What is the towing capacity of a Ford F-150?” Of course, the answer depends on the year you are looking at as well as considerations such as engine type.

2016 F-150

The 2016 Ford F-150 has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds to 12,200 pounds. The 5,000 pounds is with a 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine, 3.55 axle ratio and a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 9,400 pounds. The 12,200 pounds is with a 3.5-liter GTDI V6 engine, 18-inch wheels, 3.55 axle ratio, 141-inch wheel base and a 4×2 drivetrain.

Factors such as cab configuration, drivetrain and trim partner with engine type to determine towing capacity. Features such as Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Tow/Haul Mode are optional and may provide Ford drivers with a better sense of safety and security as they tow.

The Ford F-150 towing capacity for more-recent model years is the same as or close to the 2016 capabilities.

More on What Goes into Towing Capacity

If you are thinking of ways to expand your Ford’s towing capacity, hold off for a moment. It can be dangerous to tow too much without thinking about it. First, manufacturers set a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which is a constant figure that serves as a weight limit. You can frequently find your vehicle’s GVWR near where the driver’s door latches or from the car manufacturer. Exceeding that weight limit can result in unsafe conditions such as slow braking and poor steering.

Three factors go into GCWR: the weight of the F-150 when it is empty (called base curb weight), the weight of what is inside the vehicle and what has been attached to the vehicle (called cargo weight), and allowable payload, which is the figure you get when you subtract the cargo weight from the GVWR. Basically, there is no way to increase towing capacity without totally reworking the vehicle.

Not to worry, though! You can use equipment such as trailers, fifth wheels or gooseneck hitches to have some room to play with. Pay attention to the tongue weight to ensure you are safely within acceptable towing weights.

What Ford F-150s Can Tow

Ford F-150, especially from recent model years, can handle pretty much any towing. It can handle situations such as basic towing of boats, campers and cars. For more towing power, though, look for increases attributes in areas such as:

  •         Engine horsepower
  •         Engine torque
  •         Rear axle
  •         Transmission
  •         Brakes

Even in 2003, F-150s with automatic transmission, 3.55 gears and a 5.4-liter V8 engine could tow 8,000 pounds.

It is important to drive safely while you are towing. You have less flexibility on the road and less room to move in. Your ability to see behind you also diminishes. Be careful to check thoroughly before making lane changes; an error could lead to someone being run off the road. The great news is that Ford F-150s have the ability to tow as much as 12,000-plus pounds. You can use fifth wheels and trailers for more storage capacity. Just remember to drive safely!
