- Pine Island Ridge Natural Area in Davie
With a high canopy of trees above you, the Pine Island Ridge Natural Area is perfect for hiking. With higher elevation than most of the everglades, the view is quite refreshing. Here you’ll find the highest point in Broward County with an elevation of 29 feet above sea level. The trailhead for this park is located in Tree Tops Park, where there’s also access to the Westbridge-Robbins Park Trail. This perfect hiking area is located at 3900 S.W. 100th Ave. in Davie.
- Chapel Trail Nature Preserve in Pembroke Pines
Located on the outskirts of Pembroke Pines is the Chapel Trail Nature Preserve. The everglades ecosystem found within provides the perfect environment for hiking. You’ll find the easily accessible boardwalk close to the entrance and it will take you through lush vegetation such as red maples, coffee trees, and lantana. There are no pets allowed on this hike though, so make sure and leave your furry friends at home. Find Chapel Trail at 19800 Sheridan St.
- Secret Woods Nature Center in Fort Lauderdale
Since being dubbed the first “urban wilderness area” back in 1978, the Secret Woods Nature Center is a popular area for local hikers. Secret Woods is plentiful in wildlife since it protects 56 acres of cypress and mangrove trees. Although you can hear the buzz of city life and the local airport, the area is still quite serene. Most of the trails here consist of boardwalks and other easily traveled paths so tennis shoes should suffice. Find the Secret Woods Nature Center at 2701 W. State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale.
- Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park in Davie
Silver Lakes Rotary Nature Park covers over 40 acres with plenty of recreational hiking trails. This secluded park is located near a neighborhood, but the area is surrounded by nature, including bodies of water and plenty of trees. Keep your eyes peeled for creatures here as it’s known that alligators and iguanas call this area their home. This nature preserve is located at 5695 S.W. 52nd Ave.
- Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek
Located in urban Florida, the Fern Forest Nature Center is a great place to hit a trail, especially if you’re a nature lover. There are over 34 fern species located here, from common to endangered. Most of the trail is shaded, so be aware of mosquitos and bring bug repellent. The boardwalk will lead you to the other trails located here and you can easily spend hours hiking. You can find this trail at 201 S. Lyons Road in Coconut Creek.
